Wadden Sea World Heritage

Terschelling is the central island among the five Dutch Wadden Islands. Did you know that the Wadden Sea has a unique status? The entire Wadden region is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area spans 500 kilometers and includes 50 islands. The Wadden Sea World Heritage Site is the largest intertidal zone in the world, where natural processes occur uninterrupted along the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark.

As you sail towards Terschelling, you'll experience firsthand why this area is so special. The Wadden Sea is shallow, offering expansive views. You literally leave the mainland behind as you navigate through the region. In the distance, you may see the outlines of other islands or the coast, and you might spot a group of seals lounging on a sandbank. Birds are always visible and audible, and during migratory seasons, you can observe many unique bird species. In and around the Wadden Sea, nature thrives freely, and the impact of the weather is more palpable.

In the channels where the water flows between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, it can be quite deep. These channels are found throughout the Wadden region. The navigation routes are winding, with the tides dictating where you can sail. The Wadden Sea is different with every season, and even every day. It is a dynamic area where tides rule, the weather is more noticeable, and flora and fauna dominate.

Wadden Sea World Heritage Ambassador

At Terschelling Recreation, we are eager to share our love for the Wadden Sea. Tjermelân proudly holds the title of Ambassador for Wadden Sea World Heritage. This means that we:

Commit to operating consciously and sustainably, following a green, circular checklist to minimize our footprint.
Pledge to use local products and producers while avoiding polluting items such as single-use plastics.
Promise to continuously train ourselves and share our knowledge with other ambassadors and partners of Wadden Sea World Heritage.

One Wadden Sea – One World Heritage

In 2009, the Wadden Sea was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Danish portion added in 2014, due to its globally unique geological and ecological values. Nowhere else on Earth can you find such a dynamic natural landscape with a multitude of habitats shaped by wind and tides.

The Wadden Sea is crucial for global biodiversity. It is home to over 10,000 species of plants and animals, which continuously adapt to the ever-changing environment. Additionally, its enormous biomass productivity attracts 10 to 12 million migratory birds annually, who come here to forage during their journeys.

To ensure the protection of the Wadden Sea, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark joined forces 30 years ago, taking responsibility to preserve this irreplaceable ecosystem for current and future generations.
