24 December Lantern parade in Oosterend
On Christmas Eve, the village of Oosterend organises the traditional lantern parade. The village is attractively lit throughout the entire Christmas Holiday. Various entrepreneurs organise specific Christmas activities. Christmas Eve is a very special night in Oosterend; we celebrate darkness and light by making a unique lantern parade through the village. Everyone is invited to take a lantern and join the parade. The parade will stop at several places to have a bite or to participate in a fun activity. Take a joint walk in the darkness, lighting the way with your own lantern, alongside the dunes and the polder of Terschelling, and make this evening an unforgettable night.
26 December Kerstwandeltocht (Christmas walking tour) in the village of West-Terschelling
A surprising tour of about 10 kilometres, plotted by Staatsbosbeheer (a Dutch public organisation that manages a sizeable amount of the nature reserves in the Netherlands). The route will take you through the forest, the dunes and the polder landscape. Along the way, you will be treated to theatre and live music. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to have a bite or a drink during the tour. Afterwards, you will be awarded a certificate, designed by a local artist from Terschelling: Frans Schot. At the same time, a ‘winterfair’ is organised round the start and finish of the tour. At this fair, young and old will find plenty of fun things to do. Even if you do not wish to walk the tour, the fair is definitely worth a visit!
