‘Terschelling vertelt’ (Terschelling is telling); colourful island

During the spring holidays, you will be led through the streets of Terschelling by night, to various locations where you can listen to stories told by ‘real’ islanders.
These stories are exciting and romantic. The theme of the stories is islander culture and history. Afterwards, visitors will gather in local bars and restaurants. This story tour is being organised in Kinnum on Tuesday 1 March and in Formerum on Thursday 3 March.

2 april Fjoertoer .

The Fjoertoer Terschelling offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful nature of the island: walking through the polder, the woods, and the dunes and across the beach. When night sets in, beacons of fire and light, constructed by local artists, will show you the right way to walk. And it goes without saying that you will finish at the foot of the one and only Fjoertoer (Terschelling dialect for ‘tower of light’): De Brandaris.

On Tuesday 3 May, during the May holiday, the local entrepreneurs of Midsland organise a lively market in their village. At this market, you will find various stalls selling local products from Terschelling, such as cheese, honey, cranberries, etc.

The rowing boat race of Terschelling, which was organised for the first time on 21 June 1975 in honour of the 100th anniversary of the nautical college at Terschelling, has grown into the largest rowing boat race of the Netherlands.

10 June until 19 June Oerol festival

Terschellings Oerol festival has a reputation as one of the most fun, most exceptional theatre festivals in Europe. Since its first edition in 1982, Oerol has grown to become a true phenomenon. Every year, for ten days in June, the island of Terschelling in the Wadden Sea is transformed into a unique stage for theatre, dance, street theatre, art and music. The shows are created and/or adapted specially for the exceptional locations where they are performed. The shows vary from spectacular theatrical performances to mime shows, from intimate musical theatre to hilarious circus shows, from Westerns to interactive installations: you will find all of this and more in the dunes, on the beach, in the woods, on the dikes, in sheds and barns and simply on the streets.

 

25 juni Sint Jan’s Draverij (Sint Jan horseback race) in the village of Midsland

By age-old tradition, farm horses race through the streets of the Oosterburen quarter in Midsland on 25 June. Islanders dressed in white race one another – preferably without a saddle – for glory and various prizes. This horseback race is one of the oldest islander celebrations.

8 July until 10 July Western Weekend.

On 8,9 and 10 July 2016, West-Terschelling is transformed into Western Terschelling. During the second edition of this festival, the streets of West-Terschelling will be immersed in a Country & Western vibe, which will turn them into a true Western village. During this festival, you will be able to enjoy Bluegrass and Country music, and of course you can watch line dancing. Check out the beautifully decorated horses. You can also visit a lively Western market or compete in various fun Western games. Various Western demonstration will also be held. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

 

July fairs

During the summer months of July and August, various lively fairs are organised in the villages of West-Terschelling and Midsland. At these fairs, you will find various stalls selling local products from Terschelling, such as honey, cranberries, cheese, etc. The fairs start at 9 am and they end at 5 pm. In Midsland, the fair will be held on Wednesday 20 July.
In West-Terschelling, the fair will be held on Wednesday 13 July and Wednesday 27 July.

8 & 9 August Horizontoer.

Horizontoer is a sailing, cultural musical theatre talent festival, sailing from one West Frisian island to the other. This festival takes place every year in August and it is organised by a team of professionals. Ten big ships, carrying about one hundred artists along with nature and culture loving passengers, wash over the various beaches of the West Frisian Islands for 10 days. This festival offers music, theatre and cabaret performances. They vary from intimate performances to quick-witted shows.

 

August fairs

At these fairs, you will find various stalls selling local products from Terschelling, such as honey, cranberries, cheese, etc. The fairs start at 9 am and they end at 5 pm. In Midsland, the fair will be held on Wednesday 3 August and Wednesday 17 August.
In West-Terschelling, the fair will be held on Wednesday 10 August and 24 August.

Midweek of classical music

Thanks to its earlier success, the midweek of classical music is being organised once again by Holiday Park Tjermelân in early September of this year. During this midweek, three unique concerts will be held at which students and ex-students of the conservatory will jointly demonstrate their musical talents.

 

2 until 4 September Rock `n Roll Street Terschelling.

During the first weekend of September, we are going back to the fifties! This means you will see a lot of greased quiffs, bouffant hairstyles, petticoats, Solex mopeds, old-timers and of course: plenty of live music!

 

8 September ‘Beestemerk’ (cattle market) in the village of Midsland

On the second Thursday of September, the quarters ‘Oosterburen’ and ‘Westerburen’ of the village of Midsland, welcome the yearly ‘Beestemerk’. All the way around the church, farmers sell parts of their cattle stock. This is a very pleasant market with lots of stalls to rummage about and a lively atmosphere.

19 October Autumn market of witches

This is a lovely market in Midsland, during which there is plenty to do for visitors of all ages. It is an enjoyable market where you can have a bite or a drink, listen to music, watch the lantern parade, eat marshmallows and pumpkins and spot witches. This market takes place on Wednesday 19 October from 4 pm to 7 pm.

 

29 October Night of the Night

On 29 October, the village of Oosterend celebrates the Night of the Night (a yearly event organised by nature and environmental federations, during which companies and households dim the lights to decrease the amount of light pollution). The creators of the Night of the Night request respect for the beauty of darkness. The West Frisian Islands have been declared the darkest places of the Netherlands. The foundation ‘Natuurlijk Oosterend’, wishes to invite you to experience this wonderful darkness together.

6 November Berenloop marathon

This marathon on Terschelling has grown into one of the biggest athletic events of the North of the Netherlands. The ‘Berenloop’ is a marathon of national standards. The track leads the runners through the splendidly varied nature of Terschelling. Forests, dunes, meadows, polders and wide beaches form the setting of this exceptional marathon, which attracts participants from the whole country and beyond. The magazine ‘Runners World’ has described the Berenloop as one of the toughest marathons in the Netherlands.

 

17 until 20 November Movie days

Catch a breath of nice, fresh air on the wide beaches, taste local delicacies in one of the lively restaurants and drift off in one of the many unique film theatres. These theatres show pearls that were produced on Terschelling, various movie specials, the presentation of the Gouden Sil, a prize for the best short film made on Terschelling (and by islanders) and many more spectacular movies!

 

At the end of November
St Nicholas and his companions will arrive at Terschelling by steamboat, packed with presents for the children. The steamboat will moor in the port of West-Terschelling at 10:45 am. Afterwards, St Nicholas will make a tour through the village, and he will visit the villages of Midsland and Hoorn.

24 December Lantern parade in Oosterend

On Christmas Eve, the village of Oosterend organises the traditional lantern parade. The village is attractively lit throughout the entire Christmas Holiday. Various entrepreneurs organise specific Christmas activities. Christmas Eve is a very special night in Oosterend; we celebrate darkness and light by making a unique lantern parade through the village. Everyone is invited to take a lantern and join the parade. The parade will stop at several places to have a bite or to participate in a fun activity. Take a joint walk in the darkness, lighting the way with your own lantern, alongside the dunes and the polder of Terschelling, and make this evening an unforgettable night.

 

26 December Kerstwandeltocht (Christmas walking tour) in the village of West-Terschelling

A surprising tour of about 10 kilometres, plotted by Staatsbosbeheer (a Dutch public organisation that manages a sizeable amount of the nature reserves in the Netherlands). The route will take you through the forest, the dunes and the polder landscape. Along the way, you will be treated to theatre and live music. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to have a bite or a drink during the tour. Afterwards, you will be awarded a certificate, designed by a local artist from Terschelling: Frans Schot. At the same time, a ‘winterfair’ is organised round the start and finish of the tour. At this fair, young and old will find plenty of fun things to do. Even if you do not wish to walk the tour, the fair is definitely worth a visit!

Midwintermarket in Midsland. At this market, you will find a diverse offer of lively stalls, delicious snacks and drinks, music and folk dancing, etc. This is a fun market for young and old, tourists and islanders! Come and see this wonderful market! It takes place from 4 pm to 9 pm.
